Cutting Titanium Heat Exchangers

TMC water jet were approached by a titanium fabricator with an unusual request to help manufacture parts to be fabricated into titanium heat exchangers for an offshore application. The first part, producing 25mm thick titanium blanks, was straightforward. These were then rolled into half rings and returned for further water jet cutting.

The next process was quite complex, as each half ring was cut at 45 degrees in two different planes to create mating “petals” that would be welded together to produce the vessel ends. Using both our dynamic and XD water jet capability we were able to produce these complex 3D parts quickly, dramatically reducing lead times and replacing costly sawing and secondary machining operations.
