In recent years, water jet-cutting technology has emerged as a revolutionary solution across various industries, from precision engineering to aerospace. This technology utilises a high-pressure jet of water mixed with abrasive materials to precisely cut through a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites. Its ability to cut with exceptional precision while leaving no heat-affected zone or material distortion has made water jet cutting a preferred choice for many applications.
The maritime industry is undergoing a transformation of its own, with a growing emphasis on eco-friendly practices and the reduction of carbon emissions. Ship recycling is receiving renewed attention. With the global merchant fleet expanding and the need for emission-free shipping becoming increasingly important, the coming decade will see a surge in ship-scrapping activities. This is where water jet cutting could be crucial, offering a cleaner and more sustainable approach to ship dismantling.
In June 2022, a promising pilot project for virtually emission-free ship dismantling commenced in Kiel, Germany, utilizing ANT AG’s waterjet technology. A similar pilot project is in the planning stages in Bremen.
The waterjet abrasive suspension system employed in these projects harnesses the power of high-pressure water jets mixed with abrasive materials, allowing for precise cutting of steel plates up to one meter in thickness. Even 10-millimeter-thick ship steel can be cut at a remarkable speed of about 2 meters per minute.
Water jet cutting offers a multitude of advantages in ship recycling. It produces no CO2 emissions, fumes, or slag, aligning perfectly with eco-friendly initiatives. Additionally, the absence of sparks during cutting reduces the risk of fires and explosions, enhancing safety during the recycling process. The contactless cutting method eliminates heat generation and material deformation, preserving the integrity of the materials being recycled.
