Water Jet Cutting creates art for Australian stations

Sometimes uses for water jet cutting take our breath away.

Ours is a technology that is practical, efficient and accurate. But, let’s be honest, it is also a technology where the parts cut are not always beautiful. Functional might be more the word.

However, water jet cutting can also be used for more artistic pursuits. We have great experience of this, but in this post we highlight work that has nothing to do with us. In fact, it comes from the other side of the world.

In Australia, water jet cutting has helped to create stunning art installations that will be adorning five new underground stations.

The work is created by celebrated Victorian First Nations artist Maree Clake and is entitled, fittingly, Tracks.

The works showcase native fauna found across the landscape of five traditional clans – Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, and Bunurong / Boonwurrung.

The work is five sizeable floor mosaics, made from coloured granite and made possible through water jet cutting. Each piece was then finished and assembled by hand.

To quote information from the Victorian State Council’s website:

Arden Station will feature footprints of forest-dwelling animals which may be or were once found on Wadawurrung Country, such as the quoll, the eastern pigmy possum and the koala. Anzac Station showcases footprints of animals found in coastal environments on Bunurong / Boonwurrung Country, including the fur seal and fairy penguin.

We are also aware that seeing is perhaps better than reading here – you want to see the artwork. Please have a look at the embedded video below and also visit the link that follows as this includes a photo gallery.
